Firewall Your Computer for Further Protection

Downloading an anti-virus software is one of the key elements in protecting your computer. However, it doesn’t mean you are totally protected from any attacks. Some software are created by hackers that looks really useful and friendly but they require, which is usually unknowingly, access to your personal information. There are even software that could virtually take over your computer without you knowing it.
To prevent this from happening, you need to put a strong firewall. Simply put, a firewall will prevent any software and program from running in your software unless you allow them. The firewall will practically screen the software you use and prevent those that try to access your computer other than their intended use. Depending on your settings, you can practically block anything that tries to access your computer.
Usually, a good firewall doesn’t go with the brand new computer so you need to look for one yourself. The good thing about it is that you don’t need to spend a single cent on a good firewall program. Although the full version should be purchased at a price, the firewall function of the program comes with the free package so you don’t have to upgrade to get their services. All you need is to install the program and it will work within minutes.
- NetVeda Safety.Net – We start with a little bit complicated. But don’t be intimidated with this software as it only takes a little bit of familiarity to get used to it. NetVeda is a software that lets users choose what software is safe and what is not. Another important aspect of NetVeda is the parental control which gives the parents full control on what websites should or shouldn’t be visited. A totally free application, NetVeda is geared for the more techie as the interface is a little bit challenging for beginners.
- ZoneAlarm – If you fine NetVeda too hard then ZoneAlarm might just be for you. ZoneAlarm is a totally free firewall program that lets you set the security from minimal to the most ridiculous security you could think of. Be careful though: the higher the security the slower your computer could be especially when you are connected to the internet constantly. When someone is trying to access your personal information, a pop-up will show up informing you of the intended action. Just make sure you understand what should be granted access so that your computer will function normally.
- Comodo Firewall Pro – Usually the “Pro” version means the purchased, upgraded version. But not for Comodo. Another free firewall software, this one is built for those who are not familiar with firewall security. When an intrusive program is detected, you’ll be prompted with your possible options and on what you could do. The downside of Comodo is that it clips some of the useful software and the browser might be slowed down. That’s because it practically screens everything that’s going on in your computer. Comodo is highly recommended for those who have relatively fast computer and a strong internet connection.
