More than Text Messaging

10 years ago mobile phones are only limited to bulky, analog phones good enough for a couple of minutes talk. There was even a time where the battery of the mobile phone outweighs the phone itself. You practically need a bag just to carry the battery and talk whenever you are, hoping there’s a signal somewhere.
But that was more than a decade ago. Now mobile phone doesn’t only communicate to another phone, the mobile phone can now be used as a platform for instant messaging, podcasting or even video casting. Instead of telling those who has mobile phones where you are, you can use your mobile phone to tell your friends in your instant messenger where you are. You can also use your mobile phone to podcast and vidcast your daily experiences and activities. All you need is a strong internet connection, a 3G and a telecom company that supports the program.
Here are some of the websites that offer this type of service:
- Heysan.com – the website offers a free web-based instant messaging service. Whatever mobile phone provider you have as long as you internet connection in your mobile phone, you can use this service. With one log in information for Heysan.com, you can connect to your friends in Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, AIM, Google Talk and ICQ. Think of Meebo.com as this website brings together all the known instant messaging service for free. The company earns by advertisements placed in mobile interface.
- Trutap.com – instead of being a web-based software, trutap.com offers a downloadable software that offers you messaging software and more. Windows Live Messenger (MSN or Hotmail), AIM, ICQ and Yahoo Messenger can be integrated into one instant messaging service. Convince your friends to create an account in trutap.com so you can send them unlimited messages. But the best feature of the software is free uploading of pictures in Flickr, Blogger, Xanga and other photo sharing websites. The company is also working on being integrated with Facebook and MySpace. Trutap.com is only available for AT&T subscribers and negotiations are in the works for Sprint.
- Utterz.com – technically it can be used by any phone but it’s a perfect tool to go with your mobile phone if you’re into blogging. After setting up an account, you can add their widget in your blog. Blogger, Facebook, Wordpress and Typepad can accept the widgets of Utterz.com. If you don’t have a blog, Utterz.com also could host your blog. You can call their general number, record your voice in your account and it will be posted in your blog site immediately. Perfect for mobile podcasters.
- yoMedia.com – this website works perfectly for video bloggers. For video enabled phones, you can easily record your video and upload to their website. Create an account and be sure you have a good 3G connection to upload the videos and even ringtones. You’ll have a personal account where your videos and ringtones will be stored. Just connect your phone to your computer and then synch or just transfer the files you like.
