NES for Personal Computer
Dec 6th, 2007 by Stephen Palmer
When Japan’s Family Computer was released in US in 1985, it took the name Nintendo Entertainment System or NES. Since then, Nintendo became the leader of gaming technology. Although it saw a little bit of slump when Sony’s PlayStation was released, Nintendo has regained the glory of being the leader in gaming technology with the release of their revolutionary gaming console called Wii.But even with the popularity of Wii, XBOX 360, PS3 or other gaming consoles, there are still those that go back to the roots of these games. You can also share this experience since now, you can actually play NES games in your computer instead of buying in eBay consoles and cartridges. Although the feel is not the same, it still comes as an original game that you can enjoy. It’s like casual gaming but with the 1980s feel.
You can start your NES experience with the proper software for NES called an emulator. Emulator is not the name of the software but actually a type of software that imitates or better yet, emulates the function of the gaming console. There are two softwares that I can recommend for you. First of the line of software is RockNES. Personally, this is my first emulator and after I tried for the first time, I immediately got crazy since the interaction was great. You can use Z and X for A and B respectively, ENTER for Start and Right Shift for Select. Although there are no turbo buttons, it’s a great emulator to enjoy popular NES titles. The next software that you can use is VirtualNES. This emulator is perfect if you have a joystick attached to your computer. You can easily configure this software so that it can detect the joystick. It almost has the same features with RockNES. VirtualNES however gives you the ability to use joystick but with RockNES is really easy to understand whereas VirtualNES takes sometime before the features could sink in to you brain.
Both of these software doesn’t need to be installed in your computer. After unzipping the Emulator, you can immediately run the program by clicking on their icons. As long as you don’t transfer the actual file location, you can just create a shortcut and drag them in your desktop.
After you have downloaded the software, it’s now time to get the games you can play with it. The files you have to look for have a filename that ends with .nes. The files that can be used in the emulators are called ROM. Its short for read only memory, which could be referred to so many things but ROM, has been popular to the classic games as the files used for gaming. You need to look for them and download them online. There are sites that offer downloads of a ROM as a zipped file. No need to unzip them as both VirtualNES and RockNES can read zipped files as long as inside are .nes files.
The best way to enjoy these games is to load them up in one folder and point the directory of roms to the same folder. No need to look for the file again and again every time you want to play the game.
These softwares and files are simple to use and doesn’t take much space but provides unlimited hours of enjoyment.
