Why WAP in your Mobile Phone?
Jan 13th, 2008 by Stephen Palmer
WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol. This is the standard format for most websites that are loaded in mobile phones. The world is slowly going online not only in their laptops but also in the smart and mobile phones. WAP makes it easier for people who are not in internet friendly spots. That means even though you are not in a WiFi hotspot, you can still access the internet using your mobile phone.
However, there are lots of websites that are now developed so that it could be accessible for WAP enabled mobile phones. In vice-versa there are also phones that can browse through non WAP sites such as the iPhone. If you think it’s a good thing, think again. Here are some reasons why you have to consider WAP instead of accessing a fully functional HTML based website.
1st Reason: Price. Accessing a WAP-enabled website is way cheaper compared to regular websites. Instead of using HTML, WAP-enabled websites use Wireless Mark-up Language (WML). Remember that you usually pay per kbps so you the more graphics, the more requirements of download that you should consider. That means you should even pay more. Read the news about the person who has to pay $85,000 in internet bill or a girl who has received a box full of bill for just a month’s usage.
2nd Reason: Download Time. WAP-enabled sites are built so that they could be accessed easier in mobile phones. Since your mobile phone has a weaker processor compared to laptops and computers, these websites have to be scaled down. The processing speed of mobile phones is less than 1/10th the power of today’s model of laptops. Even in iPhone, you have to consider accessing WAP enabled websites so that it will load faster. After all, iPhone is still a phone even though it has a browser.
3rd Reason: Important sites are already WAP enabled. For some reasons, there are people who wanted to access ANY website in their mobile phones. That’s possible considering there are so many phones that can actually access websites even though they are not WAP-enabled. But that doesn’t mean you can just access any sites. Remember that price you have pay for visiting websites with heavy information or links. The good thing is that important websites are WAP enabled so that you can save money while traveling. Among other applications, most free e-mail accounts can now be accessed through WAP.
4th Reason: Better protection. Personally, most common viruses that I encounter in mobile phones are through bluetooth connection. That’s OK ‘cause these viruses are built for mobile phones and could be easily removed with the proper anti-virus created for mobile phones. However, when you access a regular website that could have malwares and viruses, your mobile phone will likely to be hit really bad. These viruses are created for computers and mobile phones will find it too much.
As much as possible, access only WAP-enabled sites. This will not only give you great savings but even better access and protection. Slowly, WAP-enabled sites are increasing and it has become easier to make one. So even small businesses already has WAP-enabled websites for the world to access and see.
